Beginning as a parlor game in the early 1900s and originally titled The Landlord's Game, the game didn't catch on until the 1934 Christmas season when 5,000 privately-printed copies quickly sold out at a Philadelphia department store, attracting the attention and interest of Parker Brothers, a toy and game manufacturer. The rest, as they say, is history. Now licensed and sold in over 26 languages and 80 countries, Monopoly has never been more popular, and with new versions appearing almost monthly, shows no sign of diminishing.
